Vodacom Cup squad announced

Thursday 27 February 2014

A 30 man Kenya squad that will do duty in the forthcoming Vodacom Cup in South Africa was named this morning at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi. The squad will play as Tusker Simba XV for the duration of the tournament that kicks off on the weekend of 7-8 March 2014.

There are six debutantes in the squad -Robert Aringo, Davis Chenge, Martin Owila, Austine Gumo, Edward Oseko and Emmanuel Mavala while Sammy Warui, Kwame Owuor, Edwins Makori and Ronnie Mwenesi miss out due to work commitments. Lawrence Buyachi is injured.

Addressing the press, Team Manager Wangila Simiyu said, " This is an exciting challenge for the boys, getting exposed to big boy rugby as we seek to gain as much experience and exposure ahead of the final push for RWC 2015 qualification later this year."

Team captain Wilson Kopondo said, " It will be a gruelling challenge, but we are focused on picking up experience and exposure. We will need this if we are to be the best at the C.A.R Cup."

Kenya Rugby Union Chairman Mwangi Muthee paid tribute to all those who have made the team's Vodacom participation necessary , saying, " Today we express our deepest gratitude to our sponsors who have made this possible. Without money and expression of full moral backing from East African Breweries Limited, there was no way this ambitious project would have taken off the ground."

He also gave a rallying call to the team, saying, " We all must stand up for each other. This journey requires men and women with the heart and spine."

The team leaves Nairobi on Sunday 2 March and will be based in Cape Town for the duration of the tournament.
